Feng Shui in the Southern Hemisphere: Why Directions Work Differently

Follow the Sun, Not the Compass

If your reader is in the Southern Hemisphere (or near the equator), tell them: Throw away the compass, look at the sun.

Northern Hemisphere (Traditional)

• Sun is in the South → South = Fire (Li Trigram) = Strong Yang
• Cold shade is in the North → North = Water (Kan Trigram) = Strong Yin

Southern Hemisphere (Australia/South America)

• Sun is in the North → North = Fire (Li Trigram)
• Cold shade is in the South → South = Water (Kan Trigram)

💡 Universal Rule

Don’t memorize “South” and “North.” Memorize “Yang” and “Yin.”

Sunny Side ☀️

Wherever you are on Earth, the side that gets the most sun at noon is the “Li Direction (Fire).”

• South in Northern Hemisphere
• North in Southern Hemisphere

Shady Side ❄️

The side that receives no sun and gets cold winds is the “Kan Direction (Water).”
